Instruction

Personal instruction in fly tying, fly casting, and on-water fly fishing in Dallas–Fort Worth, Texas. Fly-tying lessons range from your first turns of thread to advanced warmwater and deer-hair construction.

Lessons begin with what you want to accomplish. You may be learning the fundamentals, working through a particular difficulty, or refining an established skill. Lee shapes the instruction around your experience, with demonstration, time to practise, and individual guidance.

Lessons are based out of Dirty Water Fly Co. in Plano, TX. Other locations may be arranged. Please enquire to discuss timing. Private fly-tying lessons usually run 1–1½ hours. Materials are included.

Fly Tying: Beginning through Advanced

Build a sound foundation in tool use, thread control, material handling, proportion, and durable construction. More experienced tyers can work on demanding techniques, cleaner transitions, greater consistency, and the decisions behind a well-built fly.

Warmwater Fly Tying

Tie purposeful flies for bass and other warmwater fishing. Explore how materials, profile, movement, and construction serve the water you fish and the fish you pursue. Instruction connects the work at the vise with the way a fly casts and behaves in the water.

Deer-Hair Tying: Beginning through Advanced

Develop control in selecting, stacking, spinning, packing, and trimming deer hair. Begin with the operations that establish a sound foundation, then progress into shaping, colour placement, proportion, and more demanding construction. Learn to understand the material and recognise what needs correcting as you work.
